Evidence Unit Operations
The Cobb County Police Department Evidence Unit is
located at 140 N. Marietta Pkwy. in the basement of the 911 Center.
The hours of operation are:
Monday - Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm. The unit is
closed on all holidays.
State law prohibits the
returning of any found property to the finder.
Property held by the Evidence
Unit is categorized in one of six ways:
Evidence
Evidence may be released prior to adjudication
of the case only with authorization from the investigating officer. Evidence may be
released after adjudication upon presentation of an order from the court.
Evidence will be released only to the owner listed on the evidence report.
Hold for
90 days
Ninety day hold property may be released if, at
the end of 90 days, there has not been a change in the disposition of the
property. If there has not been a change in the disposition of the property,
the property will be released to the listed owner. Ninety day hold property
that is not claimed by the owner will be disposed of per court order.
Safekeeping
Property held for safekeeping may be released to
the owner on, or after, the date authorized by the investigating officer.
Property held for safekeeping that is not claimed by the owner will be disposed
of per court order.
Found
Property
Found property may be released to the owner.
Found property is disposed of at county auction if the owner(s) cannot be
located, or if the owners do not claim the property after they have been
notified.
Send to
Crime Lab
Property sent to the crime lab will not be
released without an order from the court.
Destroy
Property marked “Destroy” will be destroyed by
the Evidence Unit.
Requirements for release of
property
There are legal and departmental requirements
governing the return of property. Please call ahead for specific
information about the item you wish to pick up. This will allow the
Evidence Unit to process your request and will eliminate delays.
Positive photo identification (Drivers License or State Issued I.D.) will be
required for release of property.
The owner of the property may designate another
person to pick up the property. This will require a signed, notarized,
affidavit from the owner of the property. The affidavit must also specify the
name of the person to whom the property may be released.
