Information On Filing Commendations or Complaints

COMMENDATIONS

A great form of recognition for a Police Department employee is to receive a compliment from someone whose life they have touched.  To this end the Police Department encourages commendations for personnel who perform their duties admirably.

Commendations can consist of an appreciative phone call to the employees supervisor or a formal award presented by the Chief's Office.  A letter of appreciation is the most common form of recognition.  Letters should describe the location and events of the incident along with the officers name and badge number (if available).  In all cases, the employee and his or her supervisor are made aware of the outstanding performance and a copy of the recognition is placed in the employees personnel file.

Annually, typically in March, the Cobb County Police Department hosts an Awards Recognition Ceremony in which officers & citizens are honored for outstanding deeds during the preceding year.  Awards fall into one of five categories.

Medal of Valor-  Officer must have risked his or her own life, in the line of duty, in a manner above and beyond the call of duty.

Police Blue Star- Officer must receive a significant physical injury while in the process of performing his/her duties.

Lifesaving Award- Officer must have performed an act which was instrumental in the saving of another person's life.

Bureau Commendation- Officer must have performed a meritorious deed from which the Cobb County Police Department and the Citizens of Cobb County were the benefactor.

Department Citizen Commendation- Awarded in recognition of a citizen who has given voluntary assistance and accomplished an act of outstanding personal performance for the department or citizens of Cobb County.

If you wish to commend an officer for a job well done please feel free to contact the duty officer at one of the five precincts to have the information passed along.  The name of the officer, date, time, and type of incident would be helpful.  If you wish to commend an officer or citizen that you feel falls into one of the five categories listed above please e-mail Lt. Jeff Patellis, chair of the Cobb County Police Department Awards Recognition Board at  E-Mail
